Watkins Glen Shock: Former Track President Michael Printup Dies at 60
The motorsports community is mourning the sudden death of Michael Printup, a long-time NASCAR executive and former president of Watkins Glen International. Printup, 60, spent three decades working within NASCAR’s orbit and was a central figure at Watkins Glen for 15 years, serving as track president from 2009 to 2023. His leadership helped guide one of America’s most storied road courses through major events and memorable moments, and his passing was confirmed Thursday by Racing America, which called his loss devastating to the organization and the broader racing family.
After leaving Watkins Glen, Printup joined Racing America as president of the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) before being promoted to chief operating officer in January 2024. In that role he oversaw SVRA operations and had responsibilities for the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli along with broader racing operations. He also served as president of Americrown, where he managed the Levy Food Service contract for a dozen NASCAR-owned tracks—roles that underscored his deep involvement across multiple facets of the sport.
A native of Hamburg, New York, Printup was widely respected for his commitment to motorsports and the relationships he built across the industry. Racing America’s announcement expressed condolences to his family, friends and colleagues and noted the profound impact of his dedication over nearly 30 years in the business. Social media and industry peers have already begun sharing memories and tributes, reflecting how many in the NASCAR community regarded him as both a partner and friend.
Printup is survived by his wife, Stephanie; sons Brendan (and his wife Caitlin) and Matthew; and two granddaughters, Sophia and Vivienne. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, January 7, 2026, from 2-4 p.m. at James A. Dyal Funeral Home in Summerville, South Carolina. As the racing world processes this loss, fans and colleagues alike are remembering the role Printup played in shaping events at Watkins Glen and beyond, and honoring a career that left a lasting imprint on American road-course racing.
