Massive Upset: Hornets Humiliate NBA-Leading Thunder on Home Floor
The Charlotte Hornets sent a loud message Monday night, stunning the NBA-leading Oklahoma City Thunder with a dominant 124–97 blowout on the road. What was expected to be a routine home win for Oklahoma City quickly turned into one of the most surprising results of the season.
Charlotte took control early and never looked back. Brandon Miller set the tone with a scorching first half, finishing the night with 28 points, while Kon Knueppel chipped in 23 as the Hornets dictated the pace. After jumping out to a quick double-digit lead, Charlotte carried a 67–50 advantage into halftime, then blew the game open in the third quarter when Miller buried a buzzer-beating three to stretch the margin to nearly 30.
For Oklahoma City, the night unraveled fast. The Thunder failed to reach 100 points for the first time this season and posted their lowest offensive output of the year. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 21 points, extending his streak of 20-point games, but he struggled from the field and was largely contained early. Oklahoma City also missed key opportunities at the free-throw line and never found a consistent rhythm.
The result was especially shocking given the context. The Thunder entered the night as heavy favorites and had been nearly unbeatable at home, making the 27-point loss one of the most lopsided defeats for a team expected to win by a wide margin. It marked back-to-back losses for Oklahoma City and only their second home defeat of the season.
Charlotte’s confidence only grew as the game wore on. LaMelo Ball added energy and flair, including a difficult corner shot that energized the Hornets’ bench and pushed the lead further out of reach. Any brief push by Oklahoma City was quickly answered.
The win snapped a short skid for Charlotte and served as a reminder that even the league’s best teams can be caught off guard. For the Thunder, it was a rare humbling night at Paycom Center — and one they’ll be eager to put behind them.
