Lions defensive coordinator requested for Dolphins head coach interview
The Detroit Lions could be facing the possibility of losing both of their coordinators for a second straight offseason. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Miami Dolphins have formally requested permission to interview Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard for their vacant head coaching position.
Sheppard has been part of Dan Campbell’s staff since the beginning, spending four seasons as Detroit’s linebackers coach before being promoted to defensive coordinator last year. Miami’s opening became available after owner Stephen Ross decided to part ways with Mike McDaniel following four seasons. Interestingly, the Lions quickly contacted McDaniel about their own offensive coordinator vacancy, and he is expected to interview for the role this week.
At 37 years old, Sheppard has built a strong reputation within Detroit’s organization. A former NFL linebacker who played eight seasons — including stints with both the Lions and Dolphins — Sheppard transitioned into coaching after working as LSU’s director of player development in 2020 before joining Campbell’s staff in 2021.
Sheppard’s name began circulating in head coaching discussions after Detroit’s defense performed well early in the 2025 season. While injuries and late-season struggles affected the unit, his ability to adjust and lead earned respect throughout the league. Campbell has repeatedly praised Sheppard’s growth and leadership, pointing to the trust he’s built with both players and staff.
The Dolphins’ head coaching search is expected to be competitive, with several notable candidates reportedly in the mix, including John Harbaugh, Kevin Stefanski, Klint Kubiak, Chris Shula, Jeff Hafley, and Robert Saleh. Sheppard’s potential departure would be another major shift for Detroit, which elevated him to defensive coordinator last offseason after Aaron Glenn left to take the New York Jets’ head coaching job.
