Kelvin Sheppard Officially Takes First Step Toward Lions Exit
After missing the postseason for the first time since 2022, the Detroit Lions could head into the 2026 season with noticeable changes both on the field and within their coaching staff. The offseason is already shaping up to be a pivotal one for the franchise.
Detroit recently dismissed offensive coordinator John Morton after just one year, a move that came as little surprise following the offense’s struggles in the post–Ben Johnson era. The Lions are now back on the hunt for a new offensive coordinator as they look to regain the efficiency that fueled their success in previous seasons.
While Kelvin Sheppard remains in place as defensive coordinator, his future in Detroit may be less certain. The first-year coordinator has begun attracting interest from around the league as a potential head coaching candidate.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Miami Dolphins have formally requested an interview with Sheppard for their open head coaching job after parting ways with Mike McDaniel. Sheppard, who spent two seasons with Miami during his playing career, is widely regarded as a rising coaching talent, adding another layer of uncertainty to Detroit’s coaching outlook heading into the offseason.
