Injury shocker stuns Bulls: Giddey, White sidelined — urgent tests
The Chicago Bulls announced Wednesday that three rotation players will be out for at least short-term reevaluation, creating a significant availability hole as the team navigates a heavy stretch of games. Guard Josh Giddey is being evaluated for a strained left hamstring and will be rechecked in two weeks. Guard Coby White is listed with right calf tightness and will be reevaluated in one week. Backup center Zach Collins has a sprained right toe and is scheduled for a follow-up in 10 days.
ESPN reporter Shams Charania had earlier indicated Giddey would be sidelined for “at least a few weeks.” Both Giddey and White exited Monday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves with their respective injuries, leaving Chicago without its starting backcourt and two of its leading scorers as it faces five games in seven days. Giddey has emerged as a primary playmaker and scorer this season, posting career-high averages of 19.2 points, 9.0 assists and 8.9 rebounds. White has been matching him in scoring, averaging 19.2 points per game on 45% shooting while regaining form after a calf strain that delayed his season start in August.
Collins, who missed the beginning of the season after suffering a broken left wrist, had returned and played in 10 games, averaging 9.7 points and 5.6 rebounds before this toe sprain. The combination of these absences trims Chicago’s depth in the frontcourt and backcourt and shifts added responsibility onto other rotation players as the Bulls try to maintain consistency.
Chicago’s recent form has been volatile this season: the team slipped to back-to-back losses following a five-game winning streak in December and sits at 15-17 entering Wednesday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans. This season has already seen the Bulls produce two separate five-game winning streaks and two separate five-game losing streaks, underscoring how swings in personnel and performance have affected their results. With recheck timelines for Giddey, White and Collins set in the coming 7–14 days, the immediate outlook depends on how the Bulls adapt their rotations and whether those timelines shift after further evaluation.
