Detroit Lions OC candidate David Blough hired by Commanders
One of the most intriguing names linked to the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator opening is no longer in the mix — and the decision could reshape Detroit’s offseason plans.
According to NFL Network, the Washington Commanders have promoted David Blough to offensive coordinator after two seasons as the team’s assistant quarterbacks coach. Blough steps into the role following the departure of Kliff Kingsbury, who mutually parted ways with Washington.
At just 30 years old, Blough has built a reputation as one of the NFL’s fastest-rising young coaches. That rapid ascent quickly placed him on Detroit’s radar after the Lions dismissed offensive coordinator John Morton. Given Blough’s history with the franchise, the fit appeared natural on the surface.
Blough spent parts of five seasons as a quarterback with the Lions and started five games during his rookie year in 2019. He also played under head coach Dan Campbell and worked closely with Detroit’s starting quarterback Jared Goff, familiarity that could have made his first OC job in Detroit especially appealing. Add in the Lions’ deep group of pass catchers and a strong backfield led by Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, and the opportunity looked even more attractive.
Instead, Blough chose continuity and advancement in Washington. The move allows him to keep developing young quarterback Jayden Daniels, who guided the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game during the 2024 season.
For Detroit, Blough’s decision means the search continues — and the pressure to find the right offensive leader is only increasing.
Did the Lions miss out on a perfect fit, or is a better option still ahead? Who should Detroit target next?
